Haute Meurthe

Altitude: from 370m to 1306m. Area: 19 431 hectares. Number of inhabitants: 12 975. Nine towns / villages: Le Valtin, Plainfaing, Fraize, Ban-sur-Meurthe/Clefcy, Anould, Saint-Léonard, Mandray, Entre-deux-Eaux, Saulcy-sur-Meurthe.

Whether in wind, rain or brilliant sunshine, your stay in Haute-Meurthe and in the Hautes Vosges will not be long enough to see all there is to see, or do all the activities that are on offer. Fishing, skiing, mountain biking, walking and bungee jumping are all available. Of course gourmets will not be disappointed either: you can savour the munster cheese, and you must not miss the andouille fair in the Val d'Ajol, the ham and Gruyère fair at Bulgnéville, the calf’s head fair at Rambervillers, the snails fair at Martigny les Bains, and the trout and ice cream fair at Plombières les Bains.

Places to visit in the Vosges

Gérardmer. Magnificent lake that you can visit by pedalo or sightseeing boat. A tourist town in both summer and winter, hosts the FANTASTIC'ART film festival (February).

 

Saint-Dié. Capital of the Vosges massif, godmother of America. To visit: the cathedral, the cloister, the Tower of Liberty and the museum. In October: Geography festival  

 

Traditional clog factory. Located in the centre of the valley of the lakes. Come and discover the skills and traditions of a craft handed down from father to son for generations. 25 Boulevard de la Jamagne GERARDMER Tel.: 03 29 60 09 06

 

The Straiture Gorge. Admire the spruces that are over two hundred years old in these beautiful forests. Magnificent walks. Not to be missed: the visit to the LANCOIR sawmill, (listed as a historical monument).
Demonstration of sawing and visits.

 

Gazon du Faing505 hectares of beech woods, peat bogs, moors and meadows, that rise up to an altitude of between 1,160m and 1,350m, above the towns of Le Valtin and Plainfaing. (Listed as a nature reserve).

 

Chaume de Sérichamp. Le Vic. Take the Louis François forest road. It will lead you to the Chaume de Sérichamp from where you will have a magnificent and protected view of the Honeck, and the Gazon du Faing. 

 

Le Valtin. The panoramic path that leaves from this picturesque little village offers striking views over the valley. This path will take you to Plainfaing where you can visit the Rudlin chapel, which is looked after by volunteer heritage enthusiasts.

 

The Ballons des Vosges Nature Park

Discover the nature and heritage of this magnificent region. Among
other activities the Park offers you guided visits to discover the flora and fauna, theme trips and walks, visits to mining areas and wine trails. These visits take place throughout the year.

 Ski resorts

 
Gérardmer Xonrupt are a real paradise for lovers of
open spaces, snowy forests and sporting activities. Several resorts for Nordic, Alpine and cross-country skiing are available. Cross-country skiing at the Xonrupt-Longemer resort, Nordic skiing at the Bas-Rupts resort and Alpine skiing or snowboarding at La Mauselaine resort, simply choose the type you prefer. 
 

You can also visit the mountains with snowshoes at La  Mauselaine Alpine resort or the Bas-Rupts Nordic skiing resort. The ski slopes at La Bresse, at Le Valtin and especially at Le Bonhomme (nocturnal skiing) are not to be missed. Of course, don’t forget the sledges so that your children can have fun in the snow.

 The Lakes

The lake of Gérardmer, the lake of Longemer, the lake of Retournemer, the Lac Blanc, the Lac Noir, the Lac des Truites, the Lac Vert, and finally the Pierre Percée lake (French Electricity Company reservoir) and the Lac de la Maix.

Fishing

Enthusiasts for trout and other types of fishing will find all they can hope for in the many ponds and rivers near to the self-catering chalets.

Swimming pools

Swimming pools are available for holidaymakers in Saint-Dié and Gérardmer (15 minutes from the self-catering chalets).

Fantasticable

A whole new experience! Visit the Vosges by flying over them hanging from a cable.From Gérardmer, follow the Chemin de la Rayée.  Departure from the chalet of the French School of Skiing.
